Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
knowledge of anatomy, biology, normal physiology and biochemistry acquired at secondary school and in the 1st year of studies.
Objective:
To form the students’ understanding of the morphology and functions of a sick organism, to give them a basic knowledge of clinical medicine, and to teach them to think clinically.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Preparation in advance for the class, using the recommended readings. Developing independent work and preparing a presentation.
Assessment Criteria:
Students’ knowledge, skills and competence are assessed by means of test work and seminars, when independent work is also presented. At the end of the study course, students must take an exam. Requirements for obtaining credit points: - Interim tests in each class (25% of the overall assessment). Assessment of the independent work (10% of the overall assessment). Practical classes (25% of the overall assessment).

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:As a result of completing the study course, students will have the following knowledge: - the concepts of health and sickness; pathological process; - differences between normal and abnormal growth of cells and tissues; - the effects of hypoxia on tissues; - the effects of internal and external environments on the systems of the human body; the effects and manifestations of low and high body temperatures; - the basic mechanisms of the immune system activity and the development of allergic reactions; - how the body’s compensatory and adaptive responses work; the causes of psycho-emotional and somatic stress; - how to interpret the basic symptoms and course of diseases on the basis of pathological changes; - basic diagnostic methods and treatment principles. - the creation of medical terminology.
Skills:As a result of completing the study course, students will be able: - to predict the effects of the internal and external environment on the systems of the human body, depending on the age and constitutional type of the organism; - to identify tissue and organ pathology compared to the norm; - to explain the symptoms and course of diseases on the basis of typical pathological changes; - to recognise thermoregulatory disorders in the body and explain the pathogenesis thereof; - to recognise the manifestations of allergy and explain the pathogenesis thereof; - to differentiate between psycho-emotional and somatic stress; - to identify and analyse health risk factors; - to create medical terms and use them correctly.
Competencies:As a result of completing the study course, students will be able to do the following: - understand the structure, function and interrelationships of the main body systems; - assess and analyse the impact of the internal and external environment on human body systems at different ages; - identify tissue and organ pathology compared to the norm, based on basic diagnostic methods; - explain the symptoms and course of diseases with arguments on the basis of typical pathological changes; - understand the body’s compensatory and adaptive responses depending on the influences of the surrounding environment.
