Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
Medical cell biology, cytology; advisable to study histology simultaneously with biology, anatomy, physiology and biochemistry.
Objective:
Students develop understanding of the main principles of general, special and functional human histology, structure of cells, tissue and organs; morphofunctional correlation between different tissue and organ structures, cell differentiation, regeneration, adaptation and ontogenetic changes; students develop skills in widely used light microscopy, immunohistochemical and electron microscopy methods; they develop understanding of the significance of morphology in daily clinical work; the students develop understanding of structure of different organs and systems, particularly morphofunctionality, differences and interactions between the endocrine, neural and immune systems.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Students do their independent learning when analysing the structure of histological slides in the laboratory and preparing the protocols of their practical work. Individual work with the recommended literature, according to the topic of lectures and practical classes. Preparation of small group presentations according to the topics of the course. Analysis of the results of scientific publications to raise awareness of the study course.
Assessment Criteria:
Regular attendance of practical classes. Laboratory class protocols of appropriate quality and submitted in due time. Colloquia include assessment of theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired. End-of-course oral examination testing students’ theoretical knowledge (50%) of tissue and organ morphology and practical skills (50%) in analysing specimens and schematic images. Students show how to specify age-related changes in tissues and organs. They demonstrate their understanding of important processes and functions in the tissues and organs and the ability to relate morphology with the processes.
Final Examination (Full-Time):Exam (Oral)
Final Examination (Part-Time):
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:On completion of the study course students will know and will be able to explain differences between general, special and functional histology. They will be able to interpret characteristic structural features of each tissue group and main organs; to describe differences between structures during ageing and adaptation processes. Students will be able to systematise morphological research methods and their use in daily work of a doctor.
Skills:On completion of the study course, students will be able to distinguish between the main tissue groups and the structure of the main organs in microscope and schemes; they will be able to describe and evaluate quality, information, interactions and localization of the visible tissue structures in histological slides; they will be able to record histological specimens and to obtain, assess, classify and compare information from the latest special literature and present histological schemes in the subject.
Competencies:Upon combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills, the students will be able to implement them in an unified integrative diagnostic activity. Students will be able to recognize tissue and organ morphology and structure in clinical specimens and pictures of the science of morphology. They will be able to distinguish between healthy and pathological tissues. The students will be able to assess the quality of the specimen and the way they can be used for clinic.
