Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
Cell biology, human anatomy, histology, genetics, physiology, biochemistry.
Objective:
1. To ensure studies in general and oral pathology, including insight into the morphological and functional manifestations of certain pathological processes and diseases, pathogenesis thereof. This aspect of the programme should provide the theoretical basis for learning the clinical courses corresponding to the specialty, shaping a well-educated specialist. 2. Provide a practical overview of pathology as a diagnostic branch of medicine at a level appropriate to the needs of practical work.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
During studies, the student must learn from the electronic methodical study materials PAK_050 prepared by the Department of Pathology corresponding to the thematic plan.
Assessment Criteria:
During the study course, students are offered a formative knowledge test with the help of short test works (multiple-choice test). At the end of the study course, students pass a written examination in the form of a multiple-choice test according to the planning of the respective study programme. In accordance with the RSU Academic Regulations (approved at the RSU Senate meeting of 21 April 2020; minutes No.2-1/4/2020), Paragraph 2.16, the final mark of the study course consists of the cumulative assessment (50%) and real knowledge obtained by the student (50%) in accordance with the result of the final course examination. The assessment of all test works, incl. in percentage and with grades, takes place in accordance with the current version of the Academic Regulations I of Rīga Stradiņš University.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:As a result of completing the study course, the student will know and be able to reasonably explain the nature, causes and risk factors of various diseases of the oral cavity, as well as pathological processes occurring within them and/or general pathological processes, pathogenesis and expression thereof in clinical processes, laboratory and imaging examinations, possible complications and consequences, outcomes.
Skills:The student will be able to reasonably evaluate the pathogenesis of the most common diseases of the oral cavity, relate it to the clinical manifestations and diagnostic basis of the diseases, as well as take practical steps to organise the required tissue examinations, interpret and critically analyse results thereof in relation to the overall picture of the disease.
Competencies:The obtained competences cover the pathogenesis of diseases of the oral cavity and serve as a basis for further clinical studies for the acquisition of clinical competences in the relevant specialty.
