Preliminary Knowledge:
An idea of the dual, scientific and humanitarian nature of psychic processes.
Objective:
Students should acquire knowledge about the interaction of psychic and somatic processes and develop the skill of building a therapeutic relationship with the patient.

3The characteristic concepts of structural and topographic model of the functioning of the psyche. Models and concepts of mental functioning are explained – consciousness, preconsciousness, subconsciousness, id, ego, superego, examples are given. 4Prevention mechanisms of psyche. Levels of functioning of the personality. Connection between conflict, anxiety and prevention mechanisms of psyche is explained. Prevention mechanisms of psyche are defined. Primary and secondary prevention mechanisms are described. Examples of psychic defence mechanisms are given. 9Concept of therapeutic communication. The ability to listen. Empathy, sympathy, antipathy in communication. Role of emotions in communication. Concept and forms of communication are characterized. Assessment
Unaided Work:
Read the relevant literature before each lesson, and prepare questions. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.
Assessment Criteria:
I. Knowledge – an ability to define (60%): 1. Patient’s mental health criteria (20%); 2. Patient’s psychic defense mechanisms (20%); 3. Main principles of specialist – patient relationship in orthotics and prosthetics (20%). II. Skills (40%): 1. Main principles of forming the therapeutic relationship in orthotics and prosthetics (20%); 2. Elements of supportive psychotherapy in orthotics and prosthetics (20%). Automatic pass in exam: 1. 100% attendance of classes and lectures; AND 2. Student is actively participating in discussion and role-playing; 3. By lecturer’s indication – an essay of 5 – 6 pages is written, where the student analyzes the questions that are given by the lecturer; OR The student has prepared a presentation on: a) the topic of the class (literature review); b) clinical case review; c) latest research article (according to the topic of the class).

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Knowledge of the interaction of psychic and somatic processes and competence in the formation of a therapeutic relationship between a prosthetic orthotic specialist and a patient.
Skills:Skills to make therapeutical relationships with patients and to provide emotional support.
Competencies:To analyse the role of physical, emotional and social factors in etiology and pathogenesis of disease.
