Preliminary Knowledge: | • Psychology, developmental and medical psychology; • Neurology (disorders of central and peripheral nervous system, extrapyramidal syndromes); • Ethics in medicine (specific ethical issues in psychiatry). | ||||||||
Objective: | Mental health care system in Latvia. Basic knowledge on the aetiology, pathogenesis and clinical symptoms of main mental illnesses – organic mental disorders, schizophrenia, substance use, affective, neurotic, physiological, personality disorders, mental retardation, child mental health problems. Pharmacological treatment options and application of ergotherapy in aforementioned conditions. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Students independently prepare theoretical part of practical class from lectures, RSU e-materials and recommended further reading. Patient cases description. Results of this work will be discussed in group. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | Students independently acquire the theoretical part, using RSU e-study materials, information given in the lecture and recommended additional literature. During the lessons, the results of independent work are checked and discussed in a group. The final exam is cumulative. The cumulative exam requires assessments in each lesson. Successful passing of the cumulative exam requires: 1. To successfully answer the multiple-choice test questions in each lesson 2. to submit in e-studies a description of the interpretation of clinical cases and / or a description of the patient's interpretation demonstrated during the lesson; receive a positive evaluation (A total of two clinical cases per 1 lesson). 3. to prepare and successfully defend one thematic presentation, the topics of presentations are placed in e-studies. Each point is evaluated with a mark in a 10-point system, the exam evaluation is determined as the average evaluated mark of each point. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | About epidemiology, aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnostics and course (according to ICD-10) of mental and behavioural disorders; mental health promotion, mental and behavioural disorders and suicide prevention. | ||||||||
Skills: | How to recognise and evaluate core symptoms of mental and behavioural disorders; to differentiate normal and pathological reactions in every-day life situations, to evaluate the possibility of self-harm to perform an interview, showing empathy, and to comprehend importance of therapeutic relationships in psychiatry; to plan mental health promotion and mental and behavioural disorders' prevention activities, how to distribute a competence between different professionals to communicate and collaborate with mentally ill people choosing appropriate type of ergotherapy and to lead classes of ergotherapy. | ||||||||
Competencies: | To obtain psychiatric status, to definite decision about psychiatric help distributions of competence between different physicians, to explain and apply principles of confidentiality and informed consent in psychiatry; to show understanding and empathy towards patients with psychiatric disorders. | ||||||||
