Preliminary Knowledge:
Introduction to the Theory of Law.
Objective:
To provide students with an understanding of the necessity to apply for patents on their ideas, as well as an understanding of what kind of patents are required for that.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Presentations on available patents, as well as patent assessment and individual reading of seminar texts, followed by analysis of key findings and ideas.
Assessment Criteria:
The final grade is constituted by the sum of all grades. Knowledge will be assessed using 10-point grading system. Organisation and tasks of students’ independent work: Accumulated grade and final work - exam. Percentage of the accumulated grade consists of: activity in seminars (30%); homework (30%); exam (40%). If not all written papers are submitted, the lecturer has the right not to admit the student to the exam until all written papers are submitted. Works that are found to include signs of plagiarism or the use of other students’ work will be assessed with 0 grade. For plagiarism, a student may receive the Rector’s reprimand or be expelled from the university.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:After the completion of the course, students will be able to: • define different forms of intellectual property; • explain the necessity of a patent for start-ups; • describe how the Patent Office functions; • explain the processes required for patent applications.
Skills:After the completion of the course, students are able to: • summarise essential information about the necessary product / idea to apply for a patent; • use legal terms; • communicate with the Patent Office in a sensible manner; • present their intellectual property.
Competencies:After the completion of the course, students are able to: • prepare the necessary documents to be submitted to the Patent Office; • substantiate their views on the patent laws of different countries and the advantages of each country; • analyse whether the company needs to consider some form of intellectual property; • successfully present their views to the company representatives.
