Objective:
The objective of the study course is to provide students with an understanding of the foundations of the law of the Republic of Latvia (national law, civil law, criminal law, administrative law), to introduce students to the meaning of law, nature and objectives thereof, theories of origin and sources, as well as the possibilities of application.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Study of legal literature, getting acquainted with legislative acts. Writing a paper on a specific topic.
Assessment Criteria:
Participation in classes and group work, where specific legal cases are analysed. The paper is finished and submitted. At the end of the course – a written exam.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Will define the concepts of state and law, sources of law, describe the legal system and legal relations, know information about the main legislative acts of the Republic of Latvia, contracts, types thereof and obligations of the parties, judicial deals.
Skills:Will be familiar with the main legislative acts of the Republic of Latvia, will be able to translate and interpret the provisions of the Administrative Violations Code, will be able to apply certain legislative acts to solve a specific legal problem and to substantiate the applicability of the chosen legislative acts.
Competencies:Will be able to prepare the documents necessary for commencing administrative procedure.
