Preliminary Knowledge:
Knowledge and skills of the English language at secondary school level.
Objective:
To develop students’ communication skills for use in academic and professional settings and to facilitate the acquisition of professional terminology for productive use.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Individual, pair and group work – preparing presentations on one of the course topics, work with monolingual dictionaries – explaining terms; writing summaries, referrals, searching for information in data bases according to the given principles.
Assessment Criteria:
• active and creative participation in classes; written homework – qualitative, submitted in due time, the quality of oral answers; • preparing and delivering reports on the topics of the course; • tests – checking terminology acquisition and its practical application; • at the end of the course – written and oral (a presentation and discussion) examination when the practical use of professional English language in Medicine is checked (speaking skill at comprehension level); • evaluation is accumulative; the percentage is used; for the final evaluation of the course the percentage of the examination result – 40% and the results of study work (tests, independent work, reports) – 60% are taken into account.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:On successful completion of the course, students will be able to: • recognize professional terminology in different types of texts; • recall professional terminology related to the field of medicine; • describe different phenomena in the field of medicine using professional terminology in English.
Skills:On successful completion of the course, students will be able to: • select and use appropriate terminology in English for speaking (delivering presentations, discussions) and writing in the medical field; • use appropriate language devices to share one’s ideas both in written and spoken language; • summarize the information from any kind of source in written and spoken language using relevant terminology in English; • retell the general idea and specific information in different kinds of texts from varied types of sources.
Competencies:On successful completion of the course, students will be able to apply practically the acquired terminology in different communicative situations, further studies and professional development.
