Preliminary Knowledge: | Basic knowledge of the Russian language is required (level A2 according to Common European Framework of Reference for Language Learning, Teaching and Assessment). | ||||||||
Objective: | To develop and streamline students’ knowledge of Russian for communication, academic and professional purposes and to facilitate the acquisition of professional medical terminology for productive use. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Homework assignments with particular exercises; medical terminology acquisition; analytic reading of short popular medical texts followed by a presentation. Students are obliged to fill in the course evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | Active participation in classes, 80% class attendance, adequately well done homework completed on time; medical terminology acquisition; analytic reading; end of the course test – a written test to assess functional language skills application – matching, gap filling tasks and multiple choice tasks; oral presentations on organs and their functions, diseases. The final mark depends on the presentation result (60%) and the written exam result (40%). | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | Having acquired the course successfully, the students will be able: to recognize and translate Russian medical terminology; name body parts and organ systems; describe the patient's condition and the disease course; recognize the language structures which are typical of scientific sources (the formation and declension of nouns, their agreement with adjectives; the usage of verb tenses in the active voice; the formation of the imperative; the usage of participle; etc.). | ||||||||
Skills: | Having acquired the course successfully, the students will be able: to use appropriate medical terminology when speaking with patients/clients and colleagues; produce questions and keep the conversation with patients going; read texts related to the professional field, browse texts for key words, main ideas, information needed. | ||||||||
Competencies: | Having acquired the course successfully, the students will be able: to collect anamnesis and inquire about complaints, give medical advice and treatment instructions; fill in medical forms; perceive, write down, and report necessary information on a patient's condition. | ||||||||
