Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
Biology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, histology, embryology, dental anatomy, preventive dentistry, public health, periodontology, paediatric dentistry.
Objective:
1. To raise awareness of possibilities for public dental care, to create positive, professional attitude to promotion of general and oral health and to raise awareness of planning and development of different oral health promotion and education programmes for different age groups. 2. To develop skills and competences for assessing the risk of a patient's oral health and disease, practice evidence-based non-invasive and minimally invasive caries treatment and control techniques.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
1. Students prepare a review of the assigned readings to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge during seminars (preparing presentations). To draw up oral health promoting booklets or videos. 2. At the end of the study course to make evaluation of the course.
Assessment Criteria:
1st part -presentations during the study course, worked out booklets or videos on oral health promotion. 2nd part - 70% presentations of the clinical cases of two patients + 30% evaluation of the report (description of a theoretical clinical case). The overall mark consist of the first part of 50% and the second part of 50%. Written test at the end of the course.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:1st part - Will include understanding of the evidence based principles of primary health care, common risk factor approach, systems for Oral healthcare in Latvia and abroad. Understanding of principles, approaches for oral health promotion and education, role of the dental team in oral and health promotion. Understanding the principles of new approaches in oral health promotion and wide use of new indicators of oral health. 2nd part - Will name the caries risk factors, indicators; will explain these terms. Will describe the caries risk assessment procedure. Will characterise and compare caries diagnostic methods. Will explain prevention and early treatment methods of oral diseases. Will classify and describe noninvasive and minimally invasive caries treatment methods.
Skills:1st part - Upon completion of the course the students will be able to evaluate and use into their practical work the basic principles of health promotion and education. Will be able at first to understand and suggest preventive programmes and strategies opposite to treatment regimen in dentistry. Will be able to evaluate dental patients preventive needs – eating habits, dental hygiene skills, give smoking cessation advice, intervention (5A`s), educate dental patients how to prevent dental trauma and act in case of trauma. 2nd part - Will diagnose caries with different methods, by combining them and synthesising the results; will be able to diagnose, assessing the stages and activity of carious lesions. Will interview the patient and apply diagnostic methods to determine the risk factors for the disease. Will assess caries risk with different methods. Will differentiate caries, erosion, abrasion, atritium, abfraction, congenital and acquired dental hard tissue pathologies. Will develop prevention and treatment plan of caries and other oral diseases. Will communicate the findings of the examination and treatment plan with the patient. Will apply caries preventive, non-invasive and minimally invasive treatment methods.
Competencies:1st part - Upon completion of the course the students will have ability to educate dental patients and to provide primary oral health care for population in different age groups, also with special needs. Will have ability to develop different oral health promotion programmes for different age groups. To evaluate experiences of other countries in oral health education and smoking cessation programmes. 2nd part - Will be able to independently assess the need for different caries diagnostic, detection, prevention and treatment methods, taking into consideration the needs of each patient; will be able to follow the scientific literature about new diagnostic and treatment tools and rational use of existing methods.
