Objective: | To improve the skills for communication with a patient, relatives and colleagues during the professional communication training. To develop the skills in communicating with the patient and identifying patient’s main problems; to apply appropriate communication principles to particular groups of patients and personality types; to recognise a conflict, signs of conflict, to assess the significance of a conflict and apply skills for solving it; to recognise and assess the risk of professional burn-out and shortly describe the possibilities for the prevention thereof. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Prepares for discussions in small groups on the topic of the class, gets acquainted with the given literature, theoretical material of the course, works of recommended authors and other research on the topics discussed in the course. Working in a team, studies and finds a reasoned, innovative solution, convincingly presenting it. Completes the tasks defined in the course material (for participation in seminars or for written submission). | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | Individual practical tasks performed by students during classes and active involvement in pair and group practical classes. Final test of theoretical knowledge at the end of the study course. Individual practical tasks make up 30% of the final assessment of the study course, involvement in practical classes – 20%, while the test of theoretical knowledge at the end of the course makes up 50% of the final assessment. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | As a result of completing the study course, students will be able to do the following: • characterise the communication components that underlie the establishment and maintenance of contact with the patient, family and colleagues;• define the signs of a conflict; • list the main features of personality types; • describe burn-out risks, signs and preventive measures. | ||||||||
Skills: | As a result of completing the study course, students will be able to do the following: • use active listening in role-plays, conduct the conversation professionally when collecting the anamnesis and conducting the motivational interview; • apply conflict resolution skills in simulated learning situations; • identify situations that create a risk of burn-out; • evaluate one’s resources, risks of burn-out and skills to be improved in professional communication. | ||||||||
Competencies: | • students differentiate the communication between various groups of patients and personality types and substantiate/characterise their choice; • recognise the signs of different conflict situations, use strategies to solve them; • assess their own burn-out risks. | ||||||||
