Preliminary Knowledge:
Legal Theory; History of Latvian Law.
Objective:
Enable law students to acquire basic knowledge of the European Union Law and its application.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Preparing individual written assignments according to the topics given and requirements set for during classes; independent study of the specified legal literature and practice materials; preparing an individual presentation/work on the judgment of the European Court of Justice.
Assessment Criteria:
1. Participation in seminars (tests, presentations). Participation in seminars is compulsory. Participation in seminars will constitute 35% of the final mark. 2. Essays, case studies: 25%. 3. Examination. During the end-of-course examination the student shall have to answer one problem-oriented theoretical question, test questions and to solve a case that test the student’s theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The assessment for the final examination constitutes 40% of the final mark.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:On the historical development of the EU law, on the interaction of the EU law with national law; on the institutional framework of the EU; sources of law and the role of the single market in the EU.
Skills:Analyse European laws and regulations, be familiar with the hierarchy of laws and regulations; use the acquired theoretical knowledge in solving legal cases, applying legal research and translation methods in the analysis of legal acts. Skills are tested in group work and the role play of the debate.
Competencies:Use the EU case law, independently apply the sources of the EU law to resolve various conflict situations, use the knowledge of the EU law when justifying one’s views in debates and discussions.
