Preliminary Knowledge: | History of Latvian Law. | ||||||||
Objective: | To acquaint with the concept of politics, the essence of the subject, and the aim. Throughout the course, information will be provided that will facilitate the development of a set of theoretical knowledge on the following topical issues: democratic values, participation in politics, political ethics, local government politics, international organisations, political processes in Latvia and in the world. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Independent work consists of literature selection and analysis, research of political processes. Students have to prepare a report (10 – 12 pages) on a topical political process in Latvia or in the world (the topics of the reports are confirmed at the beginning of the study course). Students also have to take the necessary materials for each class (according to the course plan) with them and be ready for discussions. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | The final grade is made up of the following components: • Assessment of written works/presentations in seminars: pass/fail. The final exam can be taken by students who have been received “pass” for all seminars. • Exam – written questions on understanding the course topics and test questions. • Active participation in lectures, expression of opinions and involvement in discussion are noted and can have a positive impact on the final assessment. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | Knowledge and understanding of the topics included in the study subject – students are able to define what are political processes, their relation to law, can name political organizations, understand political ethics, understand the role and place of local governments in policy making. | ||||||||
Skills: | Ability to analyse and independently evaluate political processes in Latvia and in the world. Ability to express one’s personal views on political and legal issues. Skill to orientate in and analyse normative acts related to the issues covered by the study course. | ||||||||
Competencies: | Communication skills – to communicate with other students of the Bachelor’s study programme on political and legal issues, demonstrate an understanding of contemporary political and legal issues. Presentation skills – ability to make a presentation and introduce it to the course members, ability to answer questions. Argumentation skills – ability to express written reasoned opinion on topical issues. | ||||||||
