Preliminary Knowledge: | The study course ”Introduction to Studies” and the study course, within which the semester paper is written. The semester paper is produced in the compulsory course which is implemented in the first year of studies and has at least three credit points. The study course “Methodology of Scientific Research Work” and the study courses, within which the semester paper is written. The semester paper is produced in the compulsory courses, which are implemented in the third and fourth years of studies and have at least three credit points. | ||||||||
Objective: | The aim of the paper is to create an understanding of the development of a research paper: application of the theoretical knowledge, academic skills and abilities. A lecturer of the corresponding study course, who has a Master’s degree, advises on drafting of the semester paper. Tasks: Systematize, consolidate and expand the theoretical knowledge and skills of a student in addressing practical tasks; promote the acquisition of skills needed for a written research paper and the methodology of studying a specific topic (problem) (selection of sources and literature, analysis, critical evaluation, material synthesis, etc.); promote independent work and focus on self-education; help to develop skills in the promotion of legal sciences (public speaking, reasoned and logical defending and substantiating of own opinions, both orally and in writing, etc.). | ||||||||

Unaided Work: | Development of the paper (including consultations) and submission for defence. Development of the paper and analysis. Development of the summary, compilation of sources and preparation of the annotation in Latvian and English or German. | ||||||||

Knowledge: | Improve and extend the student’s theoretical knowledge of administrative law, administrative procedure law, criminal law, criminal procedure and in the chosen specialisation and skills of using it in addressing practical tasks; promote the acquisition of skills needed for a written research paper and the methodology of studying a specific topic (problem) (selection of sources and literature, analysis, critical evaluation, material synthesis, etc.); promote independent work and focus on self-education; help to develop skills in the promotion of legal sciences (public speaking, reasoned and logical defending and substantiating of own opinions, both orally and in writing, etc.). | ||||||||
Skills: | Successful defence of the semester paper indicates the student’s ability to work with legal and other sources, to develop the table of contents for the paper (plan), to determine the scope of research, to analyse the opinions of other researchers, to draw conclusions and to make proposals according to the specific character of the chosen topic. Develop the ability to analyse and compare the information obtained, while expressing own opinions on the analytical work carried out. Be able to formulate thoughts and make precise legal formulations. | ||||||||
