Preliminary Knowledge:
On the structure of the Latvian social security system.
Objective:
Raise awareness of the interactions between social policy formation and the factors affecting it and learn the current social policy activities in Latvia and the European Union.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Test tasks for students are created as a written test on the understanding of theoretical material. Students’ independent work is related to independent research and characterization of an aspect of social policy.
Assessment Criteria:
• Three individual assignments completed independently (a report, a presentation, a project); • Theory test. If the written test is failed, the student shall take the repeated theoretical test orally. Integrated assessment consists of the following: 10% - attendance and activity during lectures; 30% – tests; 20% – home assignments; 40% – an examination.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Understand the processes of social policy in Latvia, introduction of social policy at the level of the State and local governments; describe the social problems that Latvia's social policy faces in the 21st century; formulate the responsibilities of the Republic of Latvia in the field of social policy in accordance with the priority directions of the European Union.
Skills:Define and use the concepts discussed in the lectures within the context of social policy in Latvia; analyse social policy research and statistics; distinguish between different types of social policy, determine how they affect Latvia's social policy.
Competencies:Use the acquired knowledge in practice in the characterisation of social policy and in the development of the Semester Paper and the Final Thesis.
