Objective

This study course is intended for the 5th year students of the Faculty of Medicine. After successful completion of all requirements of the study course the student will have acquired the basics of typical children's infectious diseases, which allows continuation of study course "Basics of paediatrics III" (including paediatric infectious diseases) in the 6th year, and also form necessary skills and attitude for doctor’s work in residency with children.

Prerequisites

Successful completion of the 1st – 4th year studies in pre-clinical and clinical subjects, including Paediatrics.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After successful completion of requirements of the study course, a student would have acquired knowledge, that allows to:
1. characterise distribution of children's infectious diseases in Latvia and in the world;
2. understand structure and operation of a children’s infectious diseases ward;
3. name infectious diseases and their immunisation time in children set in Latvia, the most frequent adverse effects and contraindications;
4. interpret today’s concept about congenital infectious of a foetus and a newborn, characterising their pathogenesis, typical clinical signs, diagnostic, therapy and prevention possibilities;
5. understand water – electrolyte metabolism disorders in children with infectious diseases, dehydration evaluation and rehydration therapy principles;
6. define terms: fever, bacteremia, sepsis, septic shock in children, analyse their causes and foresee a plan of actions in the above mentioned situations in children of different age;
7. recognise the most common exanthemous infections in children (measles, rubella, chickenpox, scarlet fever);
8. characterise features of acute respiratory illnesses in children, febrile seizures, acute laryngitis, epiglottitis, bronchiolitis;
9. recognise epidemic parotitis (mumps) and pertussis;
10. characterise features of intestinal infections and hepatitides in children;
11. characterise features of HIV infection in children;
12. name incubation periods of the commonly seen infectious diseases in children, isolation periods for patients and contacts.

Skills

After successful completion of the requirements of the study course students will:
1. know how to formulate keywords and orient themselves in textbooks and internet data bases for finding necessary information about children’s infectious diseases;
2. find a proper communication form for a child’s age for performing clinical examination;
3. know how to take history in cases of most common typical children’s infectious diseases up to 18 years of age, perform clinical examination, evaluate the general condition of patients, formulate patient’s problems in a structured way and within their competence offer solutions for diagnostics, treatment and prevention, describe the observed in a case history and report about it to the colleagues using medical terminology, taking into account ethical principles and requirements about personal data protection;
4. recognise typical forms of children’s infectious diseases included in the programme, interpret their characteristic clinical, laboratory and other examination signs, evaluate possible complications and differentials, offer treatment and prevention principles;
5. administer oral rehydration in children of different ages.

Competence

1. Competences acquired during the study course will allow to analyse most frequent health problems in children connected to paediatric infectious diseases, incl. those that require integration of pre-clinical (homeostasis, microbiology, pharmacology, etc.) and clinical medicine (paediatrics, internal medicine, infectious diseases) for effective solutions in order to prepare medical documentation.
2. Competences will allow the students to integrate their knowledge and skills in a united diagnostic work in order to evaluate child’s health, to diagnose most frequent infectious diseases, to work out individualised health care plan, to make substantiated and scientifically proven decisions about child’s life, health and well-being, as well as social health and environment.
3. Competencies will allow students to apply their knowledge and skills commencing study course “Paediatric diseases” in 6th year.
