Objective

To provide knowledge and develop understanding of oncology as a major public health issue.

Prerequisites

Biology, medical statistics, foundations of epidemiology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Will be able to explain medical statistical and epidemiological terms describing oncology, explain trends in cancer incidence and mortality, analyse Latvian data in the context of other countries, classify tumours according to the prognosis and predictive markers, explain the meaning of epidemiological factors and the possibilities of tumour therapy.

Skills

Will be able to collect relevant information from cancer registry and data of the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, perform data analysis, present oncological statistics in Latvia and other countries.

Competence

Will be able to correctly formulate a cancer diagnosis, understand the objectives and principles of tumour therapy, interpret the data of tumour statistics and epidemiological data, substantiate the devastating impact of unconventional medicine, and logically formulate and explain the aetiology and biology of tumours.
