Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
1. General English knowledge and skills at the level determined in the secondary school programme and a passed CE in English. 2. Acquired knowledge of Latvian in the framework of the secondary school curriculum.
Objective:
1. To develop the usage of communication skills in English in the field of medical terminology for study purposes and work in the specialty in the future and to promote the acquisition of medical terminology in English and its practical use. 2. To develop and strengthen the ability to draw up medical records in accordance with the requirements of the literary language. 3. To develop the ability to present and justify one's opinion in the Latvian literary language in a respectful and understandable way.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
1) fulfilment of the tasks of independent work in the course e-studies environment or in the format specified by the lecturer; 2) student's individual work – analysis and evaluation of the document language according to the requirements of the literary norm; 3) preparation and presentation of reports/papers/presentations on selected topics within the course topics, using various sources of information: books, articles, databases, Internet resources, etc.; 4) conducting tests for the knowledge of the acquired medical terminology and the practical application thereof; 5) optional indicators – attending course workshops, active participation in classes and pair/group work, timely execution, submission and presentation of assigned tasks, personal attitude to study work, dynamics of results.
Assessment Criteria:
1) the criteria for the assessment of independent work assignments and test assignments are determined according to the appropriate methodology in the course of e-studies environment or determined by the lecturer; 2) ability to analyse the text of a document from the point of view of language culture, ability to correct a mistaken text in a document and to substantiate the need for corrections, ability to clearly and comprehensibly present and justify one's opinion in Latvian literary language; 3) assessment of reports/presentations is consistent with the common criteria; 4) at the end of the course, the students take a combined exam consisting of a written part (60%) and an oral part (40%) and the evaluation criteria are appropriate for the exam programme; 5) the assessment of the 1st semester is accumulating and it consists of the results of the study work – independent work, tests and reports/seminars; the assessment of the 2nd semester (final assessment of the course) is accumulating and it consists of the results of the study work – independent work, tests and reports/seminars – 60% and the examination result – 40%.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:As a result of the study course, students: 1) will recognize medical terminology in various sources of information in English, 2) will name the most commonly used terminology equivalents in the medical field in English, 3) will explain various medical-related phenomena using the medical terminology in English, based on the Latin-Greek medical terminology and the specific medical terminology in English; 4) will know: the most common deviations from the literary norm in formation of applied text in language practice; linguistic and extralinguistic factors affecting the communication process.
Skills:As a result of the study course students: 1) will be able to find the necessary medical information from various sources, 2) will be able to select, collect, analyse and correctly use medical terminology in English for communication (for example, in conversations, discussions, presentations, etc.) in the medical discourse, 3) use appropriate means of English expression to express their views, to argue and actively participate in conversations and discussions on various medical topics, 4) provide a compilation of the information obtained and analysed from different sources, using the appropriate medical terminology in English; 5) will be able to: correct the most typical language inaccuracies in formation of applied text; evaluate linguistic factors relevant to the speech situation.
Competencies:1. As a result of successful study, students will be able to use the acquired medical terminology in English in new situations in relation to knowledge and skills acquired during other courses. 2. After completing the course, the student will be able to create a spoken or written applied text in accordance with the current norms of the literary language, to clearly and comprehensibly present and argue his/her opinion in the Latvian literary language.
