Preliminary Knowledge:
Medical Microbiology and Immunology (bacterial cell structure, pathogenicity factors, properties of viruses, parasites and fungi, groups of antibiotics, role of microbiota, mechanisms of immune response, bacteriological, serological and molecular diagnostic methods, etc.), Human Anatomy, Histology, Genetics, Biochemistry and Physiology.
Objective:
Provide knowledge of the mechanisms of pathogenesis of clinically relevant bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections, their role in the aetiology of manifestations and symptoms of infectious diseases and their interaction with the host organism. Provide knowledge of diagnostic methods used in clinical bacteriology, diagnostic algorithms in bacteriology and virology, the principles of non-specific and specific prevention, principles of antibacterial treatment.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Within the framework of the study course, each student shall prepare 4 presentations and diagnostic algorithms for identification of pathogenic causative agents in accordance with the topics of the study course. Students may use study materials provided by the Department, including clinical cases, diagnostic algorithms and information about methods of identification. During practical classes, students shall present the clinical cases, diagnostic algorithms and methods of identification, pertaining to the particular topic. Assessment of students' individual work will be carried out during practical classes. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.
Assessment Criteria:
• Regular attendance of demo lectures and practical classes, and active participation in practical classes. • Obtaining passing grades for the colloquia during the semester. Colloquia include assessment of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. • Assessment of students' individual work. • Regular tests of students' theoretical knowledge and practical skills. • A cumulative grade is granted on the basis of the aforementioned criteria. Grades obtained during the study course will count towards the cumulative grade with specific weight allocated to each grade: average grade of colloquiua will have a weight of 60%, grades for regular tests - 20%, and the grade for independent work - 20%. The cumulative grade will then be multiplied by a coefficient determined by attendance of demo lectures and practical classes. • A cumulative grade is considered as the final grade, if it amounts to a minimum of 4. • Students are permitted to decline their cumulative grade. In such cases, students shall take a final exam. It is a written exam consisting of theoretical questions, clinical cases and questions regarding the topics of practical classes.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Upon completion of the study course, students will have acquired knowledge of the pathogenic properties of bacteria, viruses and fungi, and their role in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. Students will have gained comprehension about the major infectious diseases, their pathogenesis, bacteriological, serological and molecular methods of diagnosis, specific and non-specific methods of disease prevention.
Skills:Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: • collect samples from patients, evaluating the impact of the sampling time on the result and assessing the significance of the sample volume; • transport and examine the collected samples; • isolate and identify a pure culture of bacteria, assess their antibacterial susceptibility; • apply bacteriological, serological and molecular methods in practice in order to diagnose bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections, interpret tests; • solve clinical cases of various diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites; • use diagnostic methods and algorithms while solving clinical cases.
Competencies:By combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills, students will understand the role of viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites in the origin of an infectious disease, will be able to understand the role of the agent in the pathogenesis of a disease, will know the pathogenesis, symptoms and specific and non-specific prevention of major infections and will be able to use knowledge of bacteriological, serological and molecular methods for their diagnosis. Students will be able to explain how pathogenesis of infections affects the selection of samples to be examined and the interpretation of tests. They will be able to solve clinical cases that include information about various causative agents.
