Preliminary Knowledge: | Fundamentals of human anatomy, basics of physiology and pathology, basics of microbiology, pharmacology, immunology, epidemiology. | ||||||||
Objective: | To form an understanding of the tasks and functions of GP practice, care problems of special patient groups (children, elderly patients, pregnant women) and their solutions. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | The student independently acquires the literature offered in the study program, summarizes the obtained information. Prepares a clinical pharmacist's assessment of drug therapy for different patient groups (children, adolescents, pregnant women, elderly patients). After listening to the study course and exam, fill in the study course evaluation questionnaire. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | Active participation in practical classes; timely submitted, high-quality completed homework, quality of oral answers (including demonstration of practical application of skills and theoretical knowledge in the practice of a family doctor). Exam: communication skills and the ability to perform analysis of drug therapy for different groups of patients are tested. The assessment of the exam is cumulative and consists of the assessment of the thematic presentation (60%) and the assessments of active participation in the discussion of the topics included in the study course (40%). | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | After successful completion of the study course requirements, the student will have acquired knowledge that will allow: • to understand the nosological, etiological, palliative, symptomatic most common cases of the disease in the practice of general practitioners; • to orientate in a set of individual health promotion and disease prevention measures in the practice of a family doctor. | ||||||||
Skills: | As a result of mastering the study course students will be able to: • to communicate with persons in primary care and their relatives: • in cooperation with the family doctor, assess the patient's state of health, taking into account the diagnosis, symptoms and results of examinations; • in cooperation with a family doctor, to determine the appropriate pharmacotherapy for an individual patient, to compile action plans, to evaluate the success of their implementation in the conditions typical for real family doctor practices in Latvia. | ||||||||
Competencies: | As a result of mastering the study course, students will be able to: • to implement team work and cooperate with family medicine-friendly specialists to achieve the goals of primary health care. | ||||||||
