Objective: | Learn the basics of the Latvian sign language, the ability to communicate with deaf people about everyday topics and to gain an understanding of deaf culture. | ||||||||

Unaided Work: | Student individual and pair work for development of practical work according to the course topics. Independent acquisition of certain topics using books, publications and Internet resources. Participation in group work. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | Lecture attendance; Practical work; Independent work; Test in sign language for testing skills and abilities; Written test to test the acquired theoretical knowledge. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | Basic knowledge of the Latvian sign language; an appropriate number of signs is mastered, as well as the basic knowledge of grammar of the Latvian sign language. | ||||||||
Skills: | Skills to communicate with deaf people in simple situations have been mastered; the student is aware of organisations for deaf people and their activities in Latvia and in the world; the student is able to name and describe the main characteristics of deaf culture; the student is able to find and use professional information at work. | ||||||||
Competencies: | The student is open to deaf people who belong to another culture and speak sign language; the student demonstrates willingness to communicate with deaf people; the student shows a positive attitude towards the sign language and the sign language culture; the student follows the key rules of communication with deaf people. | ||||||||
