Objective:
To form an understanding and promote the acquisition of basic knowledge about what Human Rights norms and principles operate in Latvia and internationally; what Human Rights protection mechanisms are available to the population of Latvia. During the acquisition of the study course, students will be introduced to the range of subjects to be studied; the basic concepts of Human Rights will be analyzed, their essence and content will be identified. Students will gain an idea of the normative system of society - rights and other types of social norms; will gain knowledge about sources of law, application of legal norms in practice and types of legal activity. During the acquisition of the course, topics on the perspectives of Human Rights development in the unified European legal environment and the world will be acquired.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
For the successful acquisition of the study course, students without lecture attendance are obliged to use in their independent work both the literature sources already indicated here, as well as to work actively to obtain the necessary reference materials in libraries or Internet resources. During the study process, if students wish, they will regularly receive materials on a wide range of Human Rights issues at a common e-mail address, which will be discussed and also critically evaluated later practically in classes. Due to the fact that some of the materials are in English, students' knowledge of a foreign language is highly desirable. If necessary, the lecturer will always help with advice or explanation of questions related to the acquisition of topics of interest outside the lecture time. During the first lecture, the lecturer will comprehensively acquaint students with all the conditions, requirements and scope of the course content, as well as answer all questions. Assessment Criteria:
Based on the knowledge gained during the lectures, practical classes and independent work, students must develop a written work (report) on some of the current issues of human rights (will be agreed with the lecturer). The volume of the paper work is from 4 to 6 pages. and it will assess the student's ability to apply the knowledge acquired in his / her work, as well as to perform the analysis of the chosen topic (problem). Failure to submit paper at the specified times without a valid reason will reduce the final mark. In case of any doubts or misunderstandings, please contact the instructor immediately (phone, e-mail, etc.). The end-of-course test is a written exam in which three questions must be answered. The final mark will be evaluated in a 10-point system. Prerequisites for successful completion of the course are regular attendance of lectures, active participation in lectures and seminars, (20%), successfully defended written work-report (30%) and successfully passed the written final examination (50%).

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:As a result of mastering the study course, students will be able to name and identify the most important aspects of Human Rights; to describe and analyze the main basic principles of this right in the world and in Latvia; will be prepared to work independently and apply HR protection mechanisms, as well as be able to defend and promote the observance of the mentioned HR norms in Latvia and in the world.
Skills:As a result of studies, students will be able to see and analyze possible Human Rights problems, their causes and prevention solutions; will be ready to take the necessary advocacy actions in cases of possible HR violations, skillfully applying the relevant norms of international and national law.
Competencies:The acquired knowledge will allow students to integrate into the work of law enforcement and assistance institutions; will enhance the competence of these institutions specifically in the fields of protection, strengthening, development and promotion of Human Rights; The acquired knowledge will allow students to participate in international competitions for job offers outside Latvia.
