Objective:
To create understanding of the theoretical basis and foundation of law for students of non-legal specialties, to find out the nature and functions of law, to gain insight into the Latvian legal system and various branches of law – administrative law, civil law, as well as to promote the understanding of the interpretation and application of legal provisions.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Summaries, individual project, presentations.
Assessment Criteria:
The final grade is constituted by the sum of all grades. Knowledge will be assessed using 10-point grading system. Attendance of seminars (activity and quality of answers) – 35%, Summaries – 10%, Report – 15%, Exam grade – 40%.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:After successful completion of the course, students will obtain the knowledge and understanding of the theory of law and the nature of law, key developments in public and private law, the legislative process, the judicial system in Latvia, and legal professions. Students will gain knowledge of the legal limitations of advertising and the legal provisions governing entrepreneurship. The knowledge is tested in seminars in the form of tests and solving various problem situations (cases).
Skills:After successful completion of the course, students will acquire skills to independently analyse legal processes in different fields of law, to analyse and apply laws and case law in solving various problems in entrepreneurship, as well as to evaluate the development tendencies and results of different law related processes. Student skills will be tested during seminars in the form of debates, discussions and problem solving.
Competencies:After successful completion of the course, students will be competent to use sources of law for solving different conflict situations in business, to prepare a loan agreement, to use theoretical knowledge of the theory of law to substantiate their opinion; to defend one’s opinion in solving conflict situations, to discuss legal issues and current case law and regulatory framework, to collaborate with students in debates on important legal aspects of entrepreneurship.
