Preliminary Knowledge:
Practical Entrepreneurship.
Objective:
To make students aware of the support tools available to start-ups – accelerators, business angels, venture capitalists, etc., and make them aware of the advantages and disadvantages of each tool and to develop the skills of applying for these tools successfully.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Case studies – making financial choices at start-up companies – Uber, Infogr.am and Autopilot Automotive Lab, presenting the support tool selected for one’s start-up, preparing argumentative essays on each of the support tools and comparative analysis of them.
Assessment Criteria:
The final grade is constituted by the sum of all grades. Knowledge will be assessed using 10-point grading scale. Organisation and tasks of students’ independent work: Accumulated grade and final work - exam. Percentage of the accumulated grade consists of: activity in seminars (20%); homework (30%); exam (50%). If not all written papers are submitted, the lecturer has the right not to admit the student to the exam until all written papers are submitted, but not later than by 1 January in the first semester. In case signs of plagiarism or the use of other students’ work are detected, the work will be assessed with grade “0”. For plagiarism, a student may receive the Rector’s reprimand or be expelled from the university. In case of the use of various unauthorised aids during the exam, the exam will be assessed with grade “0” without the possibility of retaking the exam.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: • describe the support tool for each start-up company; • compare the support tools available in different start-up companies; • describe the functions and principles of start-up company support tools; • evaluate the most suitable support tool for a start-up company.
Skills:Upon completion of this course, students will know how to: • prepare the materials needed for the support tools; • present the necessary/appropriate presentations for the support tools (pitch presentation, pitch deck, etc.); • gather essential information about a start-up company so that they can be suggested the most appropriate support tool; • analyse real-world situations and look for solutions offered by Latvian and international start-up business environment.
Competencies:After completing this course, students will be able to: • substantiate their views on the support tools available to the start-up company and their suitability for the particular start-up company; • work in a team and delegate responsibilities; • develop a plan for further development of the start-up company in attracting funding; • implement their business ideas based on analysis and facts.
