'Between Risk and Hope: Demographic Change and (Return)Migration in Latvia Amid Russia’s War in Ukraine' is a new large-scale scientific research project aimed at analysing how Russia’s war in Ukraine affects demographic processes, migration, re-emigration, and societal resilience in Latvia.
Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) is leading a Latvian team of scholars in a five-country international research project supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, 'EAGER: IMPRESS-U – Resilient Engineering to Advance Public Value and Innovation in Research Periphery Countries.' The project explores how higher education responds to major societal crises and how universities develop study programmes that create value for society.
From 27 to 30 January, the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) International Department will organise Welcome Week activities for international students.
The programme will take place primarily in the Great Hall, and lunch for new students will be served from 12:30 to 13:15 in the Daily cafeteria. A dedicated area will be set up for students to receive and eat their meals.

Last November, around the time of Latvia’s Independence Day, the Latvian Dental Students’ Association announced that Georgs Alberts Pimanovs, a student at two Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Faculties – of Medicine and Dentistry – had been elected European Associate Regional Representative of the International Association of Dental Students (IADS). We invited Georgs to talk about his first impressions of his new position, studies, research interests, as well as what inspires him and his hobbies.
It has been 35 years since the events when the people defended the restoration of Latvia’s independence, even at the cost of human lives. On 20 January 1991, the Soviet Special Police Unit OMON (Отряд Милиции Особого Назначения, OMOН – in Russian) attacked the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Latvia and killed five people - cameraman Andris Slapiņš was shot dead, but cameraman Gvido Zvaigzne mortally wounded; police officers were killed, and 13 participants of the Barricades were injured.
