It has been 35 years since the events when the people defended the restoration of Latvia’s independence, even at the cost of human lives. On 20 January 1991, the Soviet Special Police Unit OMON (Отряд Милиции Особого Назначения, OMOН – in Russian) attacked the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Latvia and killed five people - cameraman Andris Slapiņš was shot dead, but cameraman Gvido Zvaigzne mortally wounded; police officers were killed, and 13 participants of the Barricades were injured.
Last weekend was particularly successful for RSU sports teams.
On Sunday, 18 January, the RSU women’s handball team defeated the Jēkabpils SS team and secured a place in the Latvian Cup final, winning the semi-final series with a convincing victory over two games.
On January 27, 2026, Rīga Stradiņš University will be hosting a site visit of the Higher Education Quality Agency and a group of external experts, during which the new academic master's programme "Sports Science" will be evaluated. The visit will include meetings with the university management, management of the study programme, and lecturers, as well as an evaluation of the study environment.
On 15 January, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) held an event to express gratitude to those students and researchers who actively participated in the Jēkabs Prīmanis’ Anthropological Study on Latvia’s Population led by RSU Prof. Jānis Vētra. This year, the study is planned to continue in Bauska, Valmiera, Saulkrasti, and other locations in Zemgale and Vidzeme.
