Objective

Acquire knowledge of the organisational environment in local governments where practising social workers work, their place in the Public administration system; of social workers and social work resources in solving social situations of customers.

Prerequisites

On the structure of the Latvian social security system.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Formulate the field of social work practice, outline the role of the local government in the provision of social assistance and social services; describe compliance with the principle of good governance in dealing with social assistance clients; manage the process of providing social assistance and social services and the division of responsibilities of social workers; formulate client duties in the process of providing social assistance and social services; name the tools for assessing the material situation and the client’s needs and describe their practical application.

Skills

Analyse individual client situations in the case of requests for social assistance and social services; must be able to assess the material and social needs of customers in accordance with the requirements and ethical norms specified in regulatory enactments.

Competence

Apply the acquired knowledge in practical analysis of the client’s social situation; describe the clients’ rights to social assistance and social services in the municipality; to identify existing social services in the municipality as resources in addressing customer problems.
