Objective

To provide students with an understanding of the necessity to apply for patents on their ideas, as well as an understanding of what kind of patents are required for that.

Prerequisites

Introduction to the Theory of Law.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After the completion of the course, students will be able to:
• define different forms of intellectual property;
• explain the necessity of a patent for start-ups;
• describe how the Patent Office functions;
• explain the processes required for patent applications.

Skills

After the completion of the course, students are able to:
• summarise essential information about the necessary product / idea to apply for a patent;
• use legal terms;
• communicate with the Patent Office in a sensible manner;
• present their intellectual property.

Competence

After the completion of the course, students are able to:
• prepare the necessary documents to be submitted to the Patent Office;
• substantiate their views on the patent laws of different countries and the advantages of each country;
• analyse whether the company needs to consider some form of intellectual property;
• successfully present their views to the company representatives.
