Objective

The aim of the course is to present the concept of globalisation and theoretical approaches in studying and analysing the processes of globalisation. As part of the course, students will strengthen their understanding of globalisation, its different forms of interaction with the state, as well as the instruments used by the state to address the challenges of globalisation. A special attention in the study process will be paid to Latvia, analysing Latvia's role and capabilities in the context of globalisation. In the study process, students will stimulate critical thinking skills by offering a critical view of the portrayal of aspects of globalisation in literature and media in their individual work. Special attention will be paid to students' continued involvement and team work in lectures and seminars with a view to encouraging discussion, improving student reasoning and presentation skills, as well as the ability to express constructive criticism. The course will also train students' practical skills, simulating the development of Latvia's national positions and the EU decision-making process.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the structure and principles of public administration.

Knowledge

As part of the course, students will familiarise themselves with the concept of globalisation and theoretical approaches on how to study and analyse the processes of globalisation, as well as will strengthen awareness of globalisation, its various forms of interaction with the state and the instruments used by the state to address the challenges of globalisation. In an interactive study process, students will look for answers to such issues as manifestations of globalisation, changes in the role of the state in globalisation, challenges posed by globalisation and the states' responses to them (including through international organisations), and development of the situation in the future. A special attention in the study process will be paid to Latvia, analysing Latvia's role and capabilities in the context of globalisation.

Skills

Students will stimulate critical thinking skills by offering critical views on the portrayal of aspects of globalisation in literature and media in their individual work. Special attention will be paid to students' continued involvement and team work in lectures and seminars with a view to encouraging discussion, improving student reasoning and presentation skills, as well as the ability to express constructive criticism. The course will also train students' practical skills, simulating the development of Latvia's national positions and the EU decision-making process.

Competence

Students will be able to navigate through globalization-related terminology and critically evaluate literature and mass media information. Students will be able to discuss the opportunities and challenges of globalisation in a reasoned way, to offer balanced solutions, to unmask stereotypes.
