Objective

To introduce students to the social work profession and the competence of social work specialists; describe the directions of social work; to provide information about the state and municipal support system for various target groups; create an understanding of the levels of social work practice; introduce ways of influencing decision makers.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

To explain the basic principles and values of social work, based on the international definition of social work; list the directions of social work; describe the competence of social work specialists; describe the basic principles of state and municipal support systems and formation thereof; describe the levels of social work practice; describe ways of influencing decision makers.

Skills

To identify current social problems in Latvia; explain the concept of social work; name and describe the directions of social work; name the main laws and regulations governing social services and social assistance in Latvia, as well as list the institutions responsible for social services and social assistance in Latvia.

Competence

To understand the role and necessity of the social work profession in promoting and defending social justice, diversity and human rights.
