On Wednesday, 6 April, at 18.30, Patrick Hartley (UK), guest lecturer at the Institute of the History of Medicine, will hold a masterclass for students from Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and the Art Academy of Latvia. The masterclass will mark the beginning of the exhibition Intervention at the RSU Anatomy Museum.
rsu[pnkts]lv.Hartley is a British ceramicist known both for creating a sculpture worn by Lady Gaga and for being a passionate researcher of WWI artefacts. His themes of trenches, trauma, and the destruction of war are painfully relevant today.
Visitors to the Anatomy Museum will be able to familiarise themselves with the artist's work in August, when the exhibition Intervention opens. The Cost of Life, which was just published in Latvia, encapsulates an exhibition of the same name that was just opened in Basel. It will be on display at the Art Academy of Latvia in Riga from 18 August. The exhibition features powerful works, including a botanically accurate, commemorative WWI symbol, a poppy made of horsehair and lamb heart tissue, necklaces of prozac, viagra capsules and stethoscope parts, which is a comment on the possibilities of self-diagnosis and self-healing that the internet has enabled.
