Orientation Week at RSU: a strong start for new international students
This week marked the start of the new semester at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), with around 270 new international students and 50 Erasmus+ exchange students from over 40 countries joining the university. Many of these students arrived in Riga last week and participated in Orientation Week, organised by the RSU International Department, which took place from 28 January to 1 February.
As is traditional every semester, new students were offered a comprehensive programme of activities that included a welcome address by RSU Rector Prof. Aigars Pētersons, who emphasised that his door is always open to students. The students were also welcomed by Smuidra Žermanos, Vice-Dean for International Students at the Faculty of Medicine, Inguna Rence-Bambīte, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Māris Ginters, Acting Director of the International Department, and Reinis Gailītis, Acting Head of the International Admissions Office.
Studies, safety and well-being
During Orientation Week, students were introduced to various aspects of their academic journey, including the MyRSU student portal. Representatives from the International Student Association (ISA) and the Student Union (Studējošo pašpārvalde, SP) discussed key topics such as the study process, types of examinations, assessments, and other important academic matters.
Students received information about the wide range of national and academic societies at RSU, as well as the various events organised by ISA and SP. They also learnt valuable tips on time management and maintaining a balance between physical and mental health.
Presentations were given by staff from the RSU Library, the Department of Infrastructure, Student Services, and the Career Guidance and Wellbeing Centre. Dr. Mārtiņš Ennītis from the RSU Clinic of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy shared his insights on adapting to life in Latvia and managing mental health. Staņislavs Šeiko, a representative of the Riga Municipal Police, introduced students to the security and public order regulations in the city.
Student stories
The new students heard the first impressions of Latvia shared by RSU international students Karlijn Johanna Linda Henricus Op de Laak and Oritsetsegbemi Kunu. They were also inspired by the presentation of RSU 2024 graduate Dr. Hussaina Musaji, who shared valuable insights on how to study at RSU, including tips on choosing the best study methods, collaborating with lecturers, memorising study material, and coping with various daily challenges.
Sports and Latvian folk dances
There were also sports activities and even dancing—students had the opportunity to stay active during breaks, stretch their arms and legs, and gain energy and enjoyment by learning the steps of traditional Latvian folk dances with the guidance of the Dandari folklore dance group. To help students stay fit, the RSU Sports Club introduced the wide range of sports activities available at RSU.
Entertainment and socialising
The evening sports and entertainment activities organised by the ISA provided an opportunity to build connections and explore Riga. As most of the new international students had never visited Riga or Latvia before, the RSU Orientation Week proved to be an excellent preparation for their studies, fostering a sense of community and helping to form lasting friendships. After all, Riga and RSU will be home to many of these students for the next five or six years.
