Objective

To teach students knowledge of the role of otorhinolaryngology in a general pathology, to acquaint students with diseases, clinical symptoms, current diagnostic, treatment and prophylaxis in ENT and to give necessary skills in clinical examination of the ENT organs.

Prerequisites

Anatomy, physiology, acoustics and general surgery. Recommended knowledge of radiology, oncology and infectious diseases.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the course students will have acquired knowledge and will:
• describe clinical anatomy of the nose, sinuses, throat, larynx and the ear, their physiology and the main functions;
• describe the structure of the hearing and balance apparatus, its functions and potential deviations;
• explain the speech, language and voice production;
• identify diseases of the ear, nose and throat;
• classify the treatment methods and arrange the treatment plan;
• recognise the disease complications;
• explain the role of the organ development peculiarities in different age groups.

Skills

Upon successful completion of the course students:
• demonstrate skills and abilities in endoscopic examination of the ENT organs;
• are able to interpret results obtained by additional tests: rhinomanometry, hearing tests and radiological investigation;
• explain and recommend methods for preventing ear and throat diseases and ear hygiene methods to the patients and/or their parents;
• comprehend pharmacological and surgical treatment methods of the ENT organ diseases.

Competence

• Are capable to plan their scientific thesis, use the results from the evidence based clinical trials found in literature overviews;
• justify own opinion in planning treatment for a ENT disease;
• gauge and give prognosis of the disease results;
• know risk factors, treatment methods and prognosis affecting factors of the oncological diseases in the ENT organs.
