Objective

Develop understanding of the laws and regulations related to execution of sentences, legal relations and the procedure of the application and execution of criminal punishment.
Tasks: Introduce students to the system of application and execution of criminal punishment in Latvia.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the study courses: "Theory of Law”, “Criminal Law”, “Criminal Procedure Law” shall be acquired previously.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Knowledge of the operational principles of the penitential system, basis for practical application of criminal punishment, institutions for execution of criminal punishments, the legal situation of convicted persons, the progressive system of the deprivation of liberty sentence, the classification of convicted persons, the determination of the execution regime, the basic principles of the operation of the State Probation Service, basic international law binding in the Republic of Latvia on handling convicted persons.

Skills

Know laws and regulations binding for Latvia on the system of execution of sentences; critically evaluate the proposed changes to the sentence execution system of Latvia.

Competence

Able to observe the weaknesses of the penitentiary system of Latvia in terms of regulatory basis and application of law, to theoretically justify and argue the need for improvements through international practice, to offer specific solutions for solving the existing problems.
