There are many pharmacies (aptieka) in Riga, where you can buy a wide range of medicine, receive advice on the treatment of mild forms of various illnesses. Note that there are strict laws in Latvia regulating medication. Many medicines are available only with a prescription from a general practitioner. Unless the medicine you need can be substituted with other medication, you will have to go to the doctor to receive a prescription.

Should you become ill, you must inform either the Dean's Office (full-time students), or the Erasmus Coordinator (exchange students) of your illness. After you have recovered, you must immediately provide the respective office with your sick-leave certificate, issued by a local medical practitioner.

Health Insurance

Prior to your arrival to Latvia, you should buy a health insurance policy. The health insurance should include:

  • valid in Latvia and Schengen Area for at least one year
  • compensation of a minimum of 43 000 EUR (health related expenses)
  • covers repatriation expenses to the country of origin

For the immigration purpose, you will be asked to obtain a letter* from the health insurance company with the following information:

  • what area it covers
  • what expenses it covers
  • what services it covers

*The letter from the health insurance company can be in Latvian, English, French, Russian or German.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

  • is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any private healthcare, costs for return flight to your home country or lost/stolen property
  • does not guarantee free services. As each country’s healthcare system is different, services that cost nothing at home might not be free in another country
  • gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 28 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as people insured in that country
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid for emergency and first aid, however, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs do not accept EHIC. For immigration purpose you will be required to obtain a new insurance.
