Study content

The programme will equip you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for scientific activities in the field of biomedicine or other activities related to biomedicine - work in diagnostic laboratories, pharmacological companies and elsewhere. You will gain knowledge on how to plan, present and carry out scientific research in various fields of biomedicine, ensure the further development of science and modern technologies, foster the integration of the activities of specialists from different sub-disciplines of natural sciences in solving medical problems. You will acquire the skills to navigate biomedical guidelines and current problems and conduct scientific research using advances in fundamental sciences to solve medical problems.

Learning methods

RSU provides students with a comprehensive study process: well-equipped classrooms, modern laboratories, a modern library, computers and access to the Internet, including the RSU e-learning environment and the Student Information System (SIS-3). Laboratories involved in the implementation of the study programme are equipped with a wide range of modern equipment and facilities. Students can use the following RSU theoretical base units, institutes and laboratories in the study process and in the development of their research projects, including their Master’s theses:

Throughout your studies, you will have the opportunity to engage in research work, for example in cell and molecular biology, biochemical technologies and other biomedical fields.

The programme is designed for young professionals who intend to pursue a career in research, including work in diagnostic laboratories, e.g. in molecular biology, study new treatments and methods, explore nutrition science and other biomedical fields, including work in pharmacological companies, with the aim of improving the health of individuals and the public.

Graduates of the programme work in various Latvian research institutes and laboratories, including university units (institutes, academic departments and laboratories) where biomedical research is conducted, as well as in the pharmaceutical industry, clinical diagnostic laboratories and elsewhere. Several graduates have also chosen to pursue doctoral studies.

Today's rapid scientific and technical progress is reflected in the biomedical disciplines and is a major determinant of medical advances, thus demonstrating the long-term perspective of the choice to become a biomedical professional, as these professionals will continue to be in high demand in the future and in the international environment.

After graduation, students are offered the opportunity to compete for the participation the ERASMUS+ programme and gain biomedical work experience in a research institution in a European country.
